Be sure who you hire! At TheHomeMag we pre-screen each and every service provider on a 5-point checklist to ensure you know who you are dealing with. Our pre-screen checklist covers the following:
- License Number We verify the company has a valid state license to perform the work advertised
- Bonded We verify that the company has the appropriate bonds in place to cover the work they are advertising
- Insurance We verify the company has current general liability and workman’s compensation insurance
- Complaints We check with the state license board to see if the company has any complaints registered against them
For purposes of this Screening Criteria and Disclaimer, capitalized terms not otherwise defined herein shall have the meanings ascribed to them in the Member Agreement.
We confirm at the time of a Service Provider’s registration, that a prospective new Service Provider has all applicable required state-level trade licensing. We recommend members confirm these licensing requirements with the business and the applicable state and local licensing authorities. In some states, licensing may be required by the county or local authority in which the work is being performed. We recommend members confirm these licensing requirements before proceeding with a project. Larger projects often require the use of sub-contractors for specific types of work. For example, a kitchen remodel may also require an electrician or plumber. We recommend members verify that all the sub-contractors doing work on a project carry the appropriate licensing. Given the unique nature of California licensing, we rely on representations of Service Providers that are using a California general building contracting license to cover home improvement tasks, that such Service Providers are performing tasks as defined and required by California licensing rules. We always recommend that in addition to our efforts, members ask the business to provide a copy of their license.
Where relevant, we confirm general liability and third party insurance coverage information presented by Service Providers in their profiles at the time of their registration with us. We confirm such coverage via the Service Provider’s insurance agent. We do not confirm general liability coverage for certain categories of Service Providers where such coverage is deemed not relevant, including but not limited to: Inspectors; Appraisers; Architects; Engineers; Consultants; Home Maintenance Services; Designers; Pre-Manufactured Cabinet Makers; Organizers; Permit Services; Disability Planners; Alarm System Monitors; Toxic Materials; Toxic Material Testing; Carpet and Fabric Cleaning, dyeing and protection; Rental Services; Appliance installation and repair; Fence installation and repair; Stone & Tile installation and repair; Plaster & Drywall work; Photographers; Caterers.
For business types that require business to be bonded – we confirm that the Service Provider is bonded in the state in which it is located. This check applies to Service Providers that are corporations and Limited Liability Companies (LLC’s).
We check with the state license board for any consumer complaints that have been lodged.
Service Provider information confirmed at the time of enrollment as described above may change or expire over time; while we attempt to maintain accurate and up-to-date information, and confirm changes when notified, we perform screening solely at the time the Service Provider applies for inclusion in our advertising network; therefore, we cannot guarantee that profile and screening information is accurate. We recommend that before working with a Service Provider, Members verify that information presented in the Service Provider’s profile is still current and/or acceptable to the Member.
Corporate Accounts – Some Service Providers are employees, franchisees, dealers, or independent contractors (“Corporate SP’s”) of larger national or corporate accounts (“Corporate Accounts”). In such event, you may be matched with the Corporate Account entity or with one of their Corporate SP’s. The above screening criteria are not applicable to Corporate Accounts; therefore, we do not screen the Corporate Accounts or Corporate SP’s, but rather rely on the screening performed by the Corporate Account. If Members have any questions about what screening the Corporate Account performs on its Corporate SP’s, they should contact the Corporate Account directly.
The above procedures may change from time to time in our sole discretion. We believe that we use commercially reasonable methods to check these matters but we do not make any representations or warranties that Service Providers are appropriately licensed, free of significant state-level civil legal judgments, or carry appropriate general liability insurance or bonding at the time of registration, during the period they are Service Providers, or thereafter. As circumstances can change daily, we advise Members to check these matters for themselves especially at future dates. We do not represent or warrant that the information received from state or other government agencies or from 3rd-party sources is accurate, error free, or that it is up to date or updated at the time that we check such information. Most agencies have periodic update cycles or schedules and this information is not updated on a real-time basis by such agencies and 3rd-party sources.
