"No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted."
— Aesop
With so much happening around us every day, it’s easy to wonder what one person can really do to make a difference. The answer often starts closer to home than we think. While we may not be able to control everything happening in the world, we can control how we respond, the choices we make, and the way we treat the people around us.
The Serenity Prayer offers a timeless reminder:
“God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference, living one day at a time; enjoying one moment at a time; taking this world as it is and not as I would have it.”
— Reinhold Niebuhr
There are many ways to help make the world a better place, and they don’t have to involve grand gestures. We can start by simply being kinder and more understanding. We can mentor someone, volunteer our time or expertise, provide needed supplies, support a local organization, or make a donation. Our communities are filled with people and organizations that can benefit from whatever time, knowledge, or resources we are able to give.
Recently, I was listening to A Minute with Maxwell, a daily inspirational message featuring teachings from John C. Maxwell. The word of the day was “selflessness.” It is the ability to care for others, truly see their needs, and live beyond the boundaries of our own personal concerns. John explained that people often need someone else to help them move forward and become successful in life.
One of my greatest passions is helping people succeed by sharing knowledge and wisdom. Sometimes helping someone means encouraging them to look at a difficult situation from a different perspective and recognize possibilities or solutions they may not have seen before.
With so much uncertainty, hardship, and conflict affecting people in our communities and around the world, I find myself more grateful than ever for my loving, healthy family and the people in my life. It is also a reminder that those of us who can help have an opportunity to reach beyond ourselves and support others who may be struggling.
This week, find one way to make a positive difference for someone. Whether it is a family member, a neighbor, a coworker, or a stranger. It may be something as simple as offering encouragement, giving your time, sharing your knowledge, or lending a helping hand.
Change doesn’t always begin with something big. Sometimes it begins with one person choosing to do something good today. Never underestimate the difference you can make.
